Welcome to the Spring Newsletter. Firstly, a big round of thanks to the Lanarkshire team who organised a splendid day at Bellshill Hilton last week, well done Anne Duffty, Brian McGurn, Brendan Martin and Brigitte Yip. Secondly please find enclosed with this newsletter a draft revised Constitution; we hope this can be formally voted through at our Autumn meeting- any issues please let me know. We do need to strive for better member representation and to that end I shall be aiming to have a representative in place from most health boards over the summer.

The past year has been another busy one for BGS (Scotland) council. Council has met on 4 occasions since the last AGM in North Queensferry on 27 April 2012. Three meetings have been held in Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Larbert on 13 June 2012, 26 November 2012 and 4 March 2013. Council also met in Aberdeen on 28 September 2012.
By far the most important work has been the BGS (Scotland) response to the Scottish Government consultation on Health and Social Care Integration (June-September 2012). Council widely canvassed membership opinion before submitting a constructively critical response to the consultation document. I was subsequently involved in several locality planning workshops related to the process of Health and Social Care Integration. The Scottish Government (and UK) policy to integrate Health and Social Care and shift the balance of care from hospital to community will affect delivery of specialist health care services for older people in future.
During the course of the year, Council has also commented on the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (Scotland) report on Improving Pharmaceutical Care in Care Homes; thanks to Donald Newnham for his valuable input. We have also commented on the Royal College of Physicians Acute Care Toolkit (Acute Medical Care for Frailer Older People, March 2012) and the Joint Royal College of Physicians/British Geriatric Society “Silver Book” – Quality Standards for Care of Older People with Urgent and Emergency Care Needs, March 2012.
